Monday Lineups, News and Notes

It’s Monday, and the Osprey are already out hitting – with the Local Heroes Night Softball Game happening at 6 p.m., the teams are taking batting practice early so that they can make way for the real heroes – those people who protect and serve us on a daily basis by fighting fires and enforcing the law. And they play softball every year here on Local Heroes Night.

The Skinny:
The Osprey will continue their four-game series with the Owlz as the two teams have split the first two games of the set.

Last Time Out:
In a back-and-forth game on Sunday here at Ogren Park Allegiance Field, the Missoula Osprey ran out of runs as the Orem Owlz put on a late push to take home a 12-8 win in front of 2,091 fans. After the Osprey scored four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to take an 8-6 lead, the Owlz used a pair of home runs to score five times off of reliever Michael Rivera (1-2) to take an 11-8 advantage. The Owls added a run in the top of the ninth to account for the final margin. Socrates Brito led the Osprey at the plate with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Brito plated Missoula’s second run in the first inning, as his single scored Michael Perez, who hit an RBI triple in front of him. Brito then drove home a run with a double in the third to tie the game at 4-all. Orem used four home runs – including two from designated hitter Mike Snyder – to jumpstart their offense, as they finished with 16 hits on the night. Snyder’s second blast, a three-run shot, snapped an 8-all tie in the top of the seventh to give Orem the lead for good. Danny Pulfer added two hits and two runs scored, while Perez, Ty Linton and Rudy Flores each had two hits for the Osprey. Justin Bianco added a pair of RBI – a two-run double in the four-run sixth that pushed the Osprey in front, 8-6. Pedro Ruiz added a base hit and a pair of walks, plus scored a run.

Notes from the Nest:
Evan Marzilli singled in the first inning on Sunday to extend his current hitting streak to 10 games. It’s the second longest hit streak this season for an Osprey player (Pedro Ruiz, 11 games) … Even though he has played in 23 games, Ruiz has an intact streak of 22 straight games reaching base. He was brought in defensively in a game but never made a plate appearance, thus the streak is intact.

On the Mound Tonight:
Missoula will send right-hander Karl Triana to the hill as he continues to build on each of his last solid outings. Triana (2-1, 5.12) had won two straight starts before a no-decision against Grand Junction on Wednesday, in which he scattered five hits and two walks over five innings pitched, surrendering two runs (one earned) while striking out five batters. In his last three starts, Triana is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA. The free agent signee in 2011 opened the season with the Arizona League D-backs, fanning 10 in a five-inning outing in which he yielded five hits and an unearned run. His debut for the Osprey was a rough one, surrendering seven runs and not making it out of the fifth inning in a loss at Helena. Since then, though, teams are hitting .226 off of Triana.

The Owlz will counter tonight with right-hander Pat Lowery, who will be one of two pitchers the Osprey will see, with the other being left-hander Michael Roth. Lowery (0-2, 10.80) had served as the starter in his first four outings, posting a 12.60 ERA in that role. As the second pitcher, which Lowery was in his last outing, he allowed two in 3 1/3 innings pitched at Billings on Wednesday. Roth (0-1, 10.80) made his Owlz debut in that Wednesday start at Billings, allowing three hits and two earned runs in 1 2/3 innings pitched. Roth was the 9th-round pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim out of the University of South Carolina – Roth was a teammate of current Osprey outfielder Evan Marzilli.

Pitcher’s Best Friend:
In his first four outings this season, Ross Gerdeman did not induce a single grounded into double play. In his last two starts, he has induced six of them, including four on Saturday night. It’s believed the five total DP tied a long-standing league record of five, done twice.

AZL D-backs Alumni Briefing: The AZL D-backs lost to the AZL Giants on Sunday, 10-2. Alan Santiago (2009) was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a pair of walks.

Class A South Bend Alumni Briefing: The Silver Hawks dropped a 5-3 decision at Clinton on Sunday, in which four of the five runs scored against starter Alex Capaul (2011) were unearned. Matt Helm (2009-10) and Raul Navarro (2010) each had two hits in the setback. Kable Hogben (2009), Keith Hessler (2011) and Seth Simmons (2011) combined for 6 1/3 shutout innings of relief.

Class A Advanced Visalia Alumni Briefing: The Rawhide received a great pitching effort from Bradin Hagens (2009), Jeremy Erben (2010) and Patrick Schuster (2009-10), but lost at San Jose on Sunday, 2-1. Hagens allowed just one earned run in five innings, while Erben and Schuster did not surrender a run or a hit in their three combined innings of work.

Double-A Mobile Alumni Briefing: Chris Owings (2009) and David Nick (2009) were in the mix of an 11-3 BayBears win at Montgomery on Sunday. Owings had two hits and two RBIs, while Nick added a base hit and a run scored, as did Bobby Borchering (2009). Rossmel Perez (2008) added a couple of hits and a RBI. Derek Eitel (2010) went eight innings, allowing four hits and a walk, and three runs to pick up the win on the hill. Yonata Ortega (2007) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Triple-A Reno Alumni Briefing: Adam Eaton (2010) had the day off on Sunday, and his fellow former Osprey took care of Salt Lake, 5-3, on Sunday. Taylor Harbin (2007) had two hits and a run scored, while Rusty Ryal (2005) finished with a hit, run scored and a stolen base. Jake Elmore (2008) added a base hit for the Aces.
