Starting Lineups for July 23
Late-breaking news: The Arizona Diamondbacks moved RHP Randy Hamrick (2010) from SS-A Yakima to Triple-A Reno. It’s expected that Hamrick will make a spot start or appearance either tonight or tomorrow for the Aces.
Magic Number: 4
Factoid: Chris Ellison is about to have just his second day off of the season tonight. Which, of course, is subject to change.

Magic Number Talk
NOTE: This has been edited … the dreaded touch pad got me again. I was trying to use the “what-if” scenario, but that vanished before I hit post. Oops … where’s Herm Edwards when I need him??
by Ben Catley
I guess it’s safe to bring this up now, especially since we’re down to the final eight games of the first half. The Osprey have a magic number of six to clinch the Pioneer League North Division. Coincidentally, the Ogden Raptors also have a magic number of six to clinch the South Division.
Here’s what it looks like:
North Division
Missoula 18-12 —
Billings 15-15 3
Helena 14-16 4
Great Falls 14-16 4
Using the magic number formula – take the number of games played, subtract the difference in the loss column and add 1 – the magic number for the Osprey to clinch would be 6 over Billings, and 5 over both Helena and Great Falls. This would be same as the “elimination number” (MLB Advanced Media, the main keepers of baseball stats these days, introduced that a couple of years back).
In the South:
Ogden 20-10 —-
Orem 17-13 3
With the elimination number, both Idaho Falls and Casper have been eliminated from the first-half title run. 8-3+1= 6.
Oddly enough, there are two ways to figure both items. The simple way I did when I was growing up – taught out by baseball writers – and this way, which takes a master’s degree in statistics to follow, unless you have the patience of Job and can read it thoroughly.
News of the day … and Alumni Update
First, and this will be mentioned in the Alumni Update portion of the program, but former Osprey Derek Eitel (2010) will make the start for Triple-A Reno tonight at Sacramento. It’s the second time the Aces have used Eitel in a spot situation.
Now, on to the show … so to speak.
The Skinny: The Osprey continue their four-game series with the Casper Ghosts tonight, as they seek their fourth win in their last five games overall, and will be seeking their fifth win in their last six tries at home.
Last Time Out: The 2,116 fans in attendance at Ogren Park Allegiance Field on Thursday had plenty to cheer for as the Osprey took down the Casper Ghosts, 12-3. Jon Griffin had three hits, scored three times and drove in three runs, with a three-run home run that capped off a four-run seventh inning, and the Osprey scoring. Missoula (18-12) used the win and a 6-5 Billings loss at Orem to push their lead in the Pioneer League North Division to three games over the Mustangs, and four games over both Great Falls and Helena, who also dropped games on Thursday. The Osprey finished with 14 hits, including three by Eric Groff, who extended his current hitting streak to nine games and raised his batting average to a season-best .350. Justin Bianco and Tom Belza each added a pair of hits and two RBIs, Josh Parr had two hits and a RBI, while Chris Ellison and Ryan Court each added a base hit for Missoula. Raymond Hernandez (4-0) pitched five solid innings to pick up the win, as Osprey pitchers held the Ghosts to six hits on the night. Dexter Price allowed just a hit and a run in three innings of work, while Matt Sample worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close out the game.
The streak continues … : Eric Groff extended his current hitting streak to nine straight games, and he showed signs of being locked in on Thursday night, collecting three hits in five trips to the plate. During the nine-game streak, Groff is 17-for-38 at the plate (.447), with three doubles, a triple, four home runs and 12 RBIs. It was also his fifth multi-hit game in his last nine games. He also kept up his torrid July, hitting .400 for the month (16 games) It’s also not Groff’s longest streak of the season – he had a 10-game hitting run from June 23-July 6.
Tidbits: The Osprey are 14-5 in July, the best record in the Pioneer League, and have hit 26 home runs in the month … The Osprey are 12-6 in games decided by three or more runs … What influence does having Frank Santana and Matt Sample at the back end of games create? Game Over, almost – Missoula is 17-1 when leading after eight innings … Eric Groff also has a 14-game road hitting streak still in effect, the longest such streak in the league at the moment.
On the Mound Today: Missoula will send out right-hander Robby Rowland, who is looking to find some sort of groove in what has been a rough month for the former third-round pick. Rowland (1-2, 7.71) has been hit around since his first start of the season, and has not pitched the same since suffering concussion-like symptoms after getting hit in the face with an errant toss during pitcher’s early work on June 23, and missing a start following that episode. He has allowed at least five earned runs in each of his last four starts. The Ghosts will counter tonight with right-hander Danny Winkler, who will pitch against the Osprey for the first time this season. Winkler (1-0, 4.29) has fanned 21 batters in 21 innings of work, and the 20th round pick by the Colorado Rockies out of Central Florida has allowed opponents to hit at a .294 clip so far this season.
Osprey Alumni Update/Minor League Report:
The AZL D-backs (9-15) had Thursday off.
The DSL D-backs (17-28) did not report on their scheduled game with the DSL Rockies on Thursday.
Yakima (12-22) shut out Boise on Thursday, 4-0. Alex Capaul (2011) went five innings, scattering five hits and collecting five strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound. Former Osprey relievers Justin Albert (2010), Sammy De Los Santos (2009-10) and Randy Hamrick (2010) held the Hawks to just one hit over the final four innings to complete the shutout.
South Bend (11-15, 45-50) managed to collect an 8-6 win over Clinton on Thursday. Matt Helm (2009-10) had two doubles and four RBIs to pace the Silver Hawks at the plate, and back the pitching of Jeff Shields (2010), who picked up the win on the mound. Kable Hogben (2009) pitched two innings of one-hit relief, while Eury De La Rosa (2009) pitched the ninth and collected his second save of the season.
Visalia (11-16, 42-54) lost to Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday, 6-2. Eric Smith (2009) allowed just two earned runs in six innings of work, but suffered the loss, dropping his record to 3-11 on the season. Keon Broxton drove in a run, while fellow 2009 teammates Chris Owings and Bobby Borchering each collected a base hit, as did 2008 Osprey alum Rossmel Perez.
Mobile (21-6, 59-38) is playing great baseball at the moment, winning its fourth straight game with a 9-3 win over Birmingham on Thursday. For the first time since very early in the season, Paul Goldschmidt (2009) has dropped below the .300 mark, with a 1-for-4 performance that included two runs scored, two RBIs (he now has 86 for the season) and three strikeouts. Adam Eaton (2010), Taylor Harbin (2007) and Jake Elmore (2008) each had a base hit and a run scored for the BayBears, while Yonata Ortega (2007) pitched two scoreless innings of relief in his BayBears debut.
Reno (60-37) continues to have the best record in the Pacific Coast League, winning its ninth game in 10 tries on Thursday with an 11-4 win over Fresno. Jordan Norberto (2006) pitched two innings of relief to finish off the win for the Aces.
Schedule:
AAA Reno at Sacramento – Derek Eitel (2010) will be promoted to Reno to make the start for the Aces.
AA Mobile vs. Birmingham
A Adv. Visalia vs. Rancho Cucamonga
A South Bend vs. Clinton – Bradin Hagens (2009) will get the start for the Silver Hawks.

Game Notes from July 21 – Part 2
More from today’s game notes … specifically the Minor League Report:
Osprey Alumni Update/Minor League Report:
The AZL D-backs are currently 9-15 on the season. Victor Acosta (2010) has been very solid this season, going 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA in nine appearances, striking out 11 in 12 2/3 innings pitched.
The DSL D-backs (17-28) have received steady play from outfielder Alan Santiago (2009), who is hitting .250 with five doubles and 17 RBIs in 37 games, plus has only committed one error in the field in 35 appearances in the outfield.
Of the former Osprey playing for Yakima (11-22), one of the biggest surprises has been right-handed pitcher Teo Guitterez (2010). In seven starts, Guiterrez has posted a 3-0 record and a 2.93 ERA, logging 43 innings pitched in seven starts without surrendering a home run.
South Bend (10-15, 44-50) continues to rely on the consistent bat of Raywilly Gomez (2009), who is hitting .292 with 12 doubles, a pair of home runs and 39 RBIs. Gomez is second among the Silver Hawks in batting.
Visalia (11-15, 42-53) – who recently lost closer Yonata Ortega (2007) to Mobile – has received steady play from second baseman David Nick (2009) all season long. With some of the big names on the Rawhide roster, it’s easy to overlook Nick, who has a team-best .296 batting average with 24 doubles, a triple, nine home runs and 41 RBIs in 92 games.
Mobile (20-6, 58-38) continues to run and hide in the second half in the Southern League’s South Division race, and part of the reason was the promotion of Adam Eaton (2010) to the BayBears’ roster. Eaton is hitting .333 with two doubles, two triples, three home runs and 14 RBIs in 17 games – of which the BayBears are 15-2 in those games. Eaton is already second on the team in times hit by a pitch (six) and his .997 OPS rivals only that of Paul Goldschmidt (2009), who is hitting .300 with 27 home runs and 84 RBIs, but who has struck out more since the All-Star Break (now 83 Ks to 69 walks in 94 games), and has his OPS slip a bit, to 1.033.
Reno (59-37) continues to run away with the Pacific Northern Division of the Pacific Coast League. Jordan Norberto (2006) has been a steady contributor out of the bullpen for the Aces, going 6-1 with a save and a 4.10 ERA.
Schedule:
AAA Reno – off day (All-Star Break)
AA Mobile vs. Birmingham
A Adv. Visalia vs. Rancho Cucamonga
A South Bend vs. Clinton

Game Notes from July 21 – Part 1
Hi … we’re back.
The Skinny: The Osprey continue their push for the Pioneer League North Division First-Half crown with the lidlifter to a seven-game homestand tonight, as the Casper Ghosts fly in to begin a four-game series. The Osprey outscored the Ghosts, 28-7, and hit .342 during a three-game series sweep last week.
Last Time Out: The Missoula Osprey suffered a 10-1 loss to the Idaho Falls Chukars in the finale of a seven-game road trip on Tuesday. Despite the setback, the Osprey maintained their two-game lead over the Billings Mustangs for first place in the Pioneer League’s North Division, with nine games to play, and completed a 5-2 road trip. The Osprey have won nine of their last 12 games on the road. The Osprey were held to just five hits by Chukars starter Brian Peacock and two relievers. Peacock (1-3), one of three pitchers to toss a no-hitter at Missoula a season ago, did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. Peacock pitched into the seventh to pick up his first career win. Josh Parr had two of the five Osprey hits, and scored the lone Missoula run, following a leadoff double in the top of the seventh. Parr eventually scored on a Jon Griffin sacrifice fly. Eric Groff, Stephen Cardullo and Bryan Henry each added a base hit for the Osprey. Conrad Flynn (2-1) suffered the loss for Missoula, allowing eight runs in four 1/3 innings pitched. The Osprey defense also struggled, committing four errors in the loss.
Groff’s a Road Warrior: Eric Groff is showing signs of being fully healed from a broken bone in his hand he suffered during Extended Spring Training. The former 44th-round draft choice of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in the 2010 MLB Draft, has put together an eight-game hit streak, including getting at least one base hit in all seven road games on the recent trip. Groff – who is hitting .400 on the road this season – hit .448 (13-for-29) on the road trip, with four home runs and nine RBIs.
Tidbits: The Osprey will see four right-handed pitchers against the Ghosts this series, and that’s a good piece of news. The Osprey hit .304 against right-handers, while they only bat .234 against lefties … The Osprey are 13-5 in July, the best record in the Pioneer League, and have hit 25 home runs in the month – second to Casper (26) … The Osprey are 11-6 in games decided by three or more runs … Missoula is 14-6 in games in which they score first, and scoring first in 20 games leads the league.
On the Mound Today: Missoula will send out right-hander Raymond Hernandez, who is seeking his fourth win of the season. Hernandez (3-0, 2.14) has been electric as a starter, allowing just one earned run in 10 innings of work, while picking up a win in each of his two starts this season. The 48th-round draft choice in the 2011 MLB Draft earned Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week honors for the Week ending July 10. Hernandez allowed a solo home run and a walk in three innings of work at Casper last Friday. The Ghosts will counter tonight with right-hander Alex Gillingham, who allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings of work in a loss on Friday to the Osprey. Gillingham (1-2, 6.16) has 21 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched, but opponents have hit .310 against the right-hander this season. Gillingham was picked in the 11th round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of Loyola Marymount.
Stat of the Day: Former Osprey infielder Emilio Bonifacio (2003) is currently enjoying a 19-game hit streak for the Florida Marlins. Bonifacio is hitting .389 (28-for-72) during the hitting streak, and is hitting .400 for the month of July.
More on the big HR day
Some additional notes from Sunday’s big home-run day for the Osprey:
– The six home runs by the Osprey equal the team record … which has happened two other times. It is the first time it has happened on the road. On the other two occasions – August 25, 2004 vs. Casper, and August 3, 2007 vs. Billings – the Osprey achieved the feat at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.
– Eric Groff and Roidany Aguila become the third set of Osprey teammates to each hit two home runs in the same game. The others:
August 25, 2004 – Miguel Matos and Marcus Townsend, vs. Casper
June 21, 2003 – Johe Acosta and Carlos Gonzalez (yes, CarGo), at Great Falls
– Groff becomes the fourth Osprey player to have a pair of multi-homer games. The other three achieved the feat in the same season. They are:
Paul Goldschmidt – August 11 and 12, 2009 vs. Orem
Nelson Gomez – June 29 at Billings and August 24, 2008 vs. Helena
Marcus Townsend – July 16, 2004 at Provo and August 25, 2004 vs. Casper
– Groff’s grand slam is the first for the Osprey since … yeah, that guy … Paul Goldschmidt hit one on September 8, 2009 vs. Billings.
Time to stop dropping knowledge … Ric Flair’s theme (the original) is playing on the hotel lobby’s speakers.
Welcome to Casper
After a long bus ride on Tuesday, the Missoula Osprey have arrived in top shape ready for the seven-game road trip that could determine their fate – more like will help determine their fate – in the first half of the Pioneer Baseball League season.
The first step comes tonight, when the Osprey take on the Casper Ghosts in the first of a three-game series. Jesse Darrah gets the call for the Osprey.
We will not be able to post starting lineups or any kind of notes before the game – at least at the moment – but that may change. We’ll keep you posted.

Now to the game notes:
The Skinny: The Osprey – winners of seven of their last 10 games – used a pair of big innings to beat the Mustangs and jump into a first-place tie atop the Pioneer League’s North Division. It was the first win for Missoula over Billings at home this season, and it tied the season series at three games apiece, with two more games between the two teams in the first half.
Last Time Out: Read the game story here.
Tidbits: Justin Bianco entered Saturday’s game just 2-for-18 against left-handed pitching, but went 1-for-2 with two RBIs against Billings left-hander Ismael Guillon … Chris Ellison’s 2-for-2 night lifted his batting average to .307, while his two walks (giving him a Pioneer League-leading 16) moved his on-base percentage to .424. Teammate Stephen Cardullo ranks second in the PL in that category (.460) … With his eighth appearance of the season on Saturday, Frank Santana moved into the lead in two categories – appearances as well as being tied for the lead in saves (Helena’s Alan Williams also has three) … With his start on Saturday, Raymond Hernandez now ranks second in the Pioneer League in Earned Run Average (2.00).
On the Mound Today: Missoula will send out right-hander Robby Rowland as he looks to build on his last outing, which ended up an Osprey victory. Rowland (0-1, 6.75) did allow five runs (four earned) in five innings of work, but left the game with the lead on Tuesday in Helena. Rowland has allowed opponents to hit at a .383 clip this season, but he has also surrendered just two walks in 13 1/3 innings pitched. This will be his first start against Billings this season. The Mustangs will counter with right-hander
Wes Mugarian, who will be making his first start against the Osprey this season. Mugarian (1-2, 5.85), a 5th-round selection by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2010 MLB Draft, was solid in his last outing, scattering four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings, while allowing just two runs and collecting six strikeouts in a win at Great Falls on Tuesday. In his first three starts of the season, he posted an 0-2 record and a 6.91 ERA. In 20 innings pitched, however, Mugarian has collected 25 strikeouts.
Did you Know?: The best defensive team in Osprey history played in their last Pioneer League Championship season, in 2006. That team led the PL with a .969 fielding percentage. Good “D” doesn’t always mean titles – the 1999 PL Championship squad had a .942 fielding percentage.
Osprey Alumni Update/Minor League Report:
The AZL D-backs (6-10) lost to the AZL Rangers, 9-4, to drop their fifth in a row, while the DSL D-backs (12-22) beat the DSL White Sox, 4-1.
Yakima (7-16) fell again by a run, this time at Eugene, 7-6. The Bears allowed just five hits and only three earned runs in the setback. Kable Hogben (2009) lowered his ERA to 0.53 with two more shutout innings of relief, Henry Zabala (2009) had two hits, and David Narodowski (2009) had two runs scored without a hit – he collected three walks.
South Bend (5-11, 39-46) lost to Dayton, 4-1. Raywilly Gomez (2009) had two hits, while Roberto Rodriguez (2010) added
a base hit for the Silver Hawks. Jeff Shields (2010) pitched well enough to win, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings of work, but the Hawks’ defense committed four errors in the loss – including two by Shields. Jeremy Erben (2010) pitched a solid inning of relief.
Visalia (10-7, 41-45) took a 7-4 decision from Lake Elsinore. Keon Broxton (2009) had two hits in three trips, plus a walk, and two stolen bases, while David Nick (2009) and Rossmel Perez (2008) each added a base hit. Diogenes Rosario (2009) pitched seven solid innings for the win, and Mike Belfiore (2009) struggled in the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks, but also struck out two and held on to finish off the game.
Mobile (13-4, 51-36) had no problem playing without Paul Goldschmidt (2009) – away from the team to play in the MLB Futures Game on Sunday – and rapped out 18 hits in a 10-4 win over Mississippi. Tom Layne (2007) picked up the win with seven solid innings, and helped his own cause with a run-scoring double. Taylor Harbin (2007) had three hits, while Adam Eaton (2010) set the trend with a leadoff home run, kick-starting a six-run first inning. Eaton added a triple, scored twice and plated a pair of runs. The BayBears are 8-0 since Eaton was added to the roster. Clay Zavada (2006) allowed a run in two innings of relief work, with two strikeouts.
Reno (52-36) beat Tacoma, 14-5. Jordan Norberto (2006) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit and two walks while striking out three batters.
Schedule:
AAA Reno at Tacoma
AA Mobile vs. Mississippi
A Adv. Visalia at Lake Elsinore – Eric Smith (2009) gets the start for the Rawhide.
A South Bend at Dayton – Bradin Hagens (2009) makes the start for the Silver Hawks.

Now to the notes of the day:
The Skinny: The Osprey – winners of seven of their last nine games – knocked out Helena with a late home run, and now look to try and take on the Billings Mustangs, who have won both games here at Ogren Park Allegiance Field this season, but lost two of three at Dehler Park last weekend.
Griffin Heats Up: Jon Griffin is starting to get settled in at the plate. For the second time this week, Griffin collected three hits in a game, and has put together a modest four-game hit streak. Griffin is 8-for-20 on the week (that includes an 0-for-4 effort on July 4 at Billings), with a home run and five RBIs, helping the Osprey to four wins in those five games. Since the mini-streak began, Griffin has improved his batting average from .214 to .278, and is one of five Osprey players with double figures in runs batted in,
sharing the team-high honors with Stephen Cardullo with 12 each.
Tidbits: The Osprey are 1-4 in extra-inning games, with four of those five extended games coming against Helena … Despite his rocky outing on Friday, Osprey right-hander Conrad Flynn is now 4th in the league among qualifying pitchers in opponent’s batting average (.224).
On the Mound Tonight: Missoula will send out right-hander Raymond Hernandez as he makes his first home start of the season, and second overall. Hernandez (2-0, 2.77) has been solid in his 13 innings of work, allowing just four runs and eight hits, three of the runs were home runs, and has fanned 10 batters. He allowed just four hits in a five-inning start at Great Falls in his last start – which was his Osprey debut on June 25. He will alternate with right-hander Dexter Price (0-0, 9.75) for now in the starting rotation. The Mustangs will counter with left-hander Ismael Guillon, who has allowed 10 earned runs in 10 2/3 innings pitched. The Osprey scored six runs (four earned) in four-plus innings off of Guillon in Billings on July 4.
Osprey Alumni Update/Minor League Report:
The AZL D-backs (6-9) were shut out by the AZL Indians on Friday, 14-0.
The DSL D-backs (11-22) lost to the DSL Padres on Friday, 7-3. In their 14-4 win over the DSL Twins on Thursday, former Osprey outfielder Alan Santiago (2009) had a 2-for-4 game with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Yakima (7-15) needed 13 innings to beat Eugene on Friday, 3-2. A trio of former Osprey pitchers provided solid outings on the bump – Teo Guitterez (2010) allowed just an unearned run in 5 2/3 innings pitched, striking out eight batters, while Miles Reagan (2007-08) and Justin Albert (2010) combined for 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
South Bend (5-10, 39-45) lost to Great Lakes, 4-1. Ender Inciarte (2009) had two hits, while both Raywilly Gomez (2009) and Roberto Rodriguez (2010) added base hits for the Silver Hawks. Dan Taylor (2010) pitched a solid three innings of relief, allowing just an earned run on four hits, with three strikeouts, lowering his ERA out of the bullpen this season to an impressive 1.97.
Visalia (9-7, 40-45) took advantage of their newest edition – left-handed starting pitcher David Holmberg (2010) – and took down Lake Elsinore, 5-3. Holmberg, promoted after posting a 34-inning scoreless streak at South Bend, bounced back against
the team who ended his scoreless streak on July 3. Holmberg allowed just five hits and a walk in seven innings of work, while Adam Worthington (2009) picked up his second save with a scoreless ninth inning. Bobby Borchering (2009) had
two hits, while Keon Broxton (2009) added a hit and two RBIs.
Mobile (12-4, 50-36) won their seventh straight game, beating Mississippi in a slugfest, 14-9. Adam Eaton (2010) was among four former Osprey with a base hit – Eaton tripled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Paul Goldschmidt (2009) also plated a run and scored twice, while Taylor Harbin (2007) added a double, a run scored and a RBI, and Jake Elmore
(2008) added a run scored. Josh Ellis (2007) was the lone BayBears pitcher to not allow a run in the game, pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Reno (51-36) lost to Tacoma on Friday, 3-2. Former Osprey reliever Esmerling Vasquez (2004) allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and suffered his first loss since joining the Aces.
Schedule:

On to the notes:
The Skinny: The Osprey had their four-game win streak snapped at the hands of the Brewers on Thursday, and will look to even the season series with a win tonight in the final game the two teams will play against each other in the first half of the season. In the first seven games, Helena has won four of seven, and six of the seven have been decided by a single run.
Last Time Out: The Missoula Osprey had their chance to jump into a first-place tie in the Pioneer League’s North Division, but Parker Berberet and the Helena Brewers had other ideas on Thursday in front of 2,001 witnesses at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. The Brewers scored twice in the top of the seventh, and Berberet’s solo home run off of Victor Lara with two out in the top of the 11th inning lifted Helena to a 4-3 win, and back into a tie for second place with the Osprey. It looked as though extra innings would
not be needed, thanks to a solid start by Osprey starter Jesse Darrah. In his best start as a professional, Darrah pitched six innings of four-hit ball, allowing just a single run and two walks while striking out a career high eight batters. Darrah has now fanned 15 batters in his last 11 innings of work. The Osprey would take a 2-0 lead in the third, thanks to a run-scoring single by Josh Parr, and a RBI single by Ryan Court, who would finish with three of Missoula’s nine hits on the night. After the Brewers manufactured a run in the fourth off of Darrah – on a walk, a groundout and two wild pitches – the Osprey would answer in the sixth, on back-to-back doubles from Court and Jon Griffin, giving the Osprey a 3-1 lead. Johan Jaime came on in the seventh for Missoula and struggled, giving up three straight hits that led to two Helena runs that tied the game. DJ Johnson made his Osprey debut in the eighth, and retired all six batters he faced.
Holding Court: Ryan Court had an off-day and watched his Osprey teammates win in Helena on Wednesday. He took advantage of getting placed back into the lineup on Thursday, and responded with a three-hit game. The effort bumped Court’s average to .258, and he also managed to collect his team-leading fifth double and 10th extra-base hit in the contest. Court also joins Stephen Cardullo (12) and Griffin (11) with double-digit runs batted in, plating his 10th run of the season in the third inning on Thursday.
Don’t Run On Me: The Osprey catchers have been quite successful throwing out potential base-stealers this season. In fact, Roidany Aguila leads the Pioneer League in that department, throwing out eight of a possible 14 base-stealers – recording outs at a 57.1% clip. Aguila threw out a pair of baserunners in the same inning (the top of the 5th) on Thursday.
On the Mound Tonight: Missoula will send out right-hander Conrad Flynn as he makes his first start of the season. Flynn (2-0, 2.92) has pitched effectively in his 12 1/3 innings of work, allowing just four runs while scattering 11 hits and three walks, with 15 strikeouts. He will alternate with left-hander Taylor Siemens (1-0, 2.19) in the starting rotation. Siemens will also pitch for the Osprey tonight. The Brewers will counter with right-hander Andy Moye, who is the reigning Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week. Moye (2-0, 1.93) has fanned 16 batters in 14 innings pitched, while scattering 12 hits and a walk, surrendering just three runs on the season. Both of Moye’s wins have come against Great Falls.
Osprey Alumni Update/Minor League Report:
The AZL D-backs (6-8) lost on Wednesday to the AZL Athletics, 4-3.
When the DSL D-backs (10-21) lost to the DSL Reds, 6-0, on Wednesday, they had just one hit – delivered by former Osprey Alan Santiago (2009). No update was available on their Thursday game with the DSL Twins.
Yakima (6-15) lost to Eugene on Thursday, 5-2. Henry Zabala (2009) singled, doubled and scored a run for the Bears, while Sammy De Los Santos (2009-10) provided two innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit and collecting three strikeouts.
South Bend (5-9, 39-44) lost to Great Lakes, 7-1, on Thursday. In this game, former Osprey pitcher Patrick Schuster (2009-10) was ejected after he hit Loons first baseman Chris Jacobs with a pitch, which ignited a bench-clearing brawl. It should be noted
that Jacobs ran through catcher Ramon Castillo (2009) when Castillo had jumped into the air to field a throw, which caused Castillo to leave the game. Schuster hit Jacobs in the leg with the first pitch following that incident. Two Great Lakes players and both managers were also ejected. Schuster was among four former Osprey pitchers providing shutout relief out of the bullpen
for the Silver Hawks – including Blake Cooper (2010), Eury De La Rosa (2009) and Victor Capellan (2009).
Roberto Rodriguez (2010) had one of the six South Bend hits.
Visalia (8-7, 39-45) used three former Osprey pitchers in relief, and a double and two RBIs from former Osprey infielder David Nick (2009) to beat Lake Elsinore, 5-3. Derek Eitel (2010) pitched 4 2/3 shutout innings of relief, surrendering just two walks and collecting three strikeouts, to pick up the win. Taylor Sinclair (2008) retired the only batter he faced, and Yonata Ortega (2007) finished up the night, despite allowing a pair of ninth-inning runs.
Mobile (11-4, 49-36) continues to roll, beating Birmingham, 9-4, for their sixth straight win. Adam Eaton (2010) had a typical Adam Eaton night – going 1-for-2 at the plate, scoring a run, driving in a run, and getting hit by three pitches. Eaton is now hitting .320 in the six games since being promoted to Mobile on July 2. Paul Goldschmidt (2009) went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and his 77th RBI, while Jake Elmore (2008) added two hits and two runs scored. That was enough to back the pitching of Jarrod Parker (2007), who allowed just two hits and two walks in five shutout innings.
Reno (51-35) beat Tacoma on Thursday, 4-3. Jordan Norberto (2006) tossed an inning of scoreless relief to earn his sixth win in seven decisions, while Bryan Shaw (2008) pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up his sixth save with the Aces.
