Goldy labeled “Breakout Star” by MLB Network

by Ben Catley

Well, it took three years, a smashing debut into the Major Leagues and a postseason run to remember … but the man we know as Goldy is finally in a Top 10 list we like.

OK, let’s go one better … it’s a Prime 9 List.

Former Osprey first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was named the seventh best Breakout Prospect on the MLB Network’s Prime 9 segment of MLB Hot Stove recently. Goldschmidt hit eight home runs in 48 games, batting .250 and driving in 26 runs after getting called up to the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 1.

So much for getting snubbed from the Pioneer League All-Star team in 2009, eh? Since then, Goldschmidt has earned MVP honors in two different leagues, as well as mid-season and post-season All-Star honors in both the California League and Southern League. And former baseball executive and current MLB Network analyist Larry Luccino is calling for Goldschmidt to have a 30-plus home run season in 2012.

“When he hits it, it has a different sound and they go way out of the ballpark,” said Luccino of Goldschmidt at the plate.

Uh … yup, they do.

Former Osprey get non-roster invites to D-backs MLB camp

A total of five former Missoula Osprey have received invitations to attend the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Major League Spring Training camp, which is slated to begin on February 20 – the date that pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report. The rest of the squad will be on hand for the first full team workout on February 26.

The players who have received the invite are as follows:

Catcher: Rossmel Perez (2007)

Infielders: Rusty Ryal (2005), Chris Owings (2009)

Outfielder: Adam Eaton (2010)

Pitcher: Charles Brewer (2009)

Perez is regarded by many as the best defensive catcher in the D-backs’ minor league system. Perez spent the entire 2011 season with Class A Advanced Visalia. Ryal played last season in Japan and signed a minor-league deal with the D-backs before the winter meetings. Owings was with Perez at Visalia. Eaton and Brewer helped the Double-A Mobile Bay Bears to their first Southern League title since 2004 last season.

The five are among 20 players who received a non-roster invite, which goes to players under contract which are not part of the club’s 40-man roster. Also expected in Major League camp are former Osprey pitchers Yonata Ortega (2007) and Bryan Shaw (2008), catcher Miguel Montero (2002-03), first basemen Paul Goldschmidt (2009) and Lyle Overbay (1999), and outfielder Gerardo Parra (2006). All six are on the 40-man roster, and all but Ortega finished the season on the D-backs’ 25-man active roster.

Osprey coaching staff announced …

by Ben Catley

Well, my secret is now out in the open.

Yup, in case you missed it … the Missoula Osprey, in conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, announced the 2012 Osprey Coaching Staff on Tuesday.

While the announcement came down on Tuesday, yours truly has had to sit on this. For a month.

It has been tough to keep quiet – I did tell someone in the front office last week that I knew, but other than that, I have bit my tongue. Ever since someone called to tell me what it was … I have been anxiously awaiting the announcement so that I can post about it.

While I am excited that Andy Green is taking over as manager, and really excited to have Gil Heredia back as pitching coach, as well as having Scott Barringer (Athletic Trainer) and Andrew Slorp (Strength & Conditioning) back in the fold, it’s a bummer to have Hector De La Cruz not coming back and heading somewhere else.

As I have mentioned on here before, I believe that Hector is the best pure coach I have ever been around. And it’s not just the way he can teach the game – which makes him a perfect fit for the Arizona Rookie League team, because those young men will learn so much from him. It’s the way he can figure out who can have their buttons pushed to bring out the best in them.

Heredia will be the most experienced of the coaching staff, not only from his coaching experience – entering his third full season – but from the aspect of his career as well. Heredia will have a manager in Green who is, well, still a little green, entering just his second season as a coach at any level, while hitting coach JR House will be entering his first season as a coach.

All that being said, there is an excitement level to see how this crew will mesh. One thing is for certain, they will be in shape and taken care of … Barringer is the reigning Pioneer League Athletic Trainer of the Year, while Slorp has a season in short-season now under his belt, and knows how to get the most out of his guys who are making the adjustment from the high school or college game to the world of professional baseball.

Next on the off-season calendar … the announcement of the 2012 schedule. That should be coming out soon. I know that the front office has been hard at work getting the best possible schedule for the upcoming season, and hopefully we will get to anounce it sooner rather than later.

Until then – enjoy the holiday shopping season. And get your Griz tickets and gear at the MSO Hub!!

Long time no read from, eh?

by Ben Catley

It’s been a while, hasn’t it??

It’s been close to a month since we’ve had an entry (I think) on the Missoula Osprey blog. Partially … the season ended way too soon for both the Osprey and for the Arizona Diamondbacks in the playoffs. Partially … because the break was needed by yours truly … although I wasn’t far from sneaking on to post a thing or two …

However, fun time is now officially over … the news feed is starting to perk up again.

– In case you missed it (and you can read all about it here), left-hander Taylor Siemens officially added to what was a record-breaking season for the Osprey, claiming the ERA title with a club-best 2.23 ERA. Not only that, he becomes the first Osprey pitcher to win an ERA title in the Pioneer League. That was all made official this past week, when the stat folk issued the Final Official Reports for each league.

Also in that, defensive honors – Roidany Aguila (catcher), Justin Bianco (outfield), Ryan Court (third base) and Dexter Price (pitcher) claimed what would be considered the Gold Gloves, if there was such a thing, finishing with the best defensive fielding percentages at their respective positions. Of the seven positions honored, the other three – first base, second base and shortstop – were taken by Orem Owlz infielders.

– Adam Eaton is tearing up the Arizona Fall League, as well as doing the things he does best, enjoying everything about being a player.

– The first 2012 Prospect List is out … this from Top Prospect Alert. Seven of the 15 on the list are former Missoula Osprey.

– Word has it that Bobby Borchering’s move from the infield to the outfield is progressing well. The 2009 Osprey alum (and part of the TPA list) started his transition during Instructional League, which wrapped up earlier this month.

Stat of the moment: Of the prior 22 former Missoula Osprey to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall League, 17 of them have gone on to the Major Leagues. See the complete list (which is now at 26) here.

Atta Boy Goldy!!

Guess who had the game-winner in the NL West Clincher for the Arizona Diamondbacks? Hmmm … I will give you three, and the first two don’t count!

Here’s Paul Goldschmidt growing his legend even more in the desert.

The D-backs were one of three teams to clinch playoff spots tonight, joining Texas (AL West) and Milwaukee (NL Central).

Vote now for Goldy, BayBears

The 2011 MiLBYs are now being voted on by minor league baseball fans … with voting going on now through October 20. Usually, we have a few current or former Osprey to brag about, but this season, quite frankly … we got jipped.

(OK, truth be told … Edwin Carl was just that good, but not to see Taylor Siemens among the best starters in short-season ball, or Eric Groff’s 24-game hit streak, which was the longest in any of the stateside short-season leagues (there was a 36-game hit streak in the Dominican Summer League, and a 25-game streak in the Venezulean Summer League) get any kind of mention whatsoever was, well, not cool.)

So, we’re left with loading the ballot box for former Osprey Paul Goldschmidt (2009), who was nominated as one of the best hitters in Double-A, and for the Mobile BayBears, who were nominated as one of the best teams in Double-A.

Head here to vote for Goldy, and head here to vote for the BayBears. Voting goes on now through October 20.

Parker gets the call

It was expected that, after the end of the Mobile BayBears season, that the Arizona Diamondbacks would call up two of their top prospects – First-round draft picks Jarrod Parker (2007) and Trevor Bauer (2011).

Well, it turns out the reports were half-right.

Parker, who spent his first days as a professional baseball player with the Missoula Osprey after signing his contract in 2007, was promoted to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.

With nine games left, the likelihood that Parker – who is now close to two years removed from Tommy John surgery – will pitch in a game for the D-backs is small, but manager Kirk Gibson did leave the door open for the possibility.

Parker was 11-8 in his first full season back from the arm injury that shelved him in late 2009, making 26 starts and posting a 3.87 ERA. He, along with Bauer, Tyler Skaggs, Patrick Corbin and former Osprey Charles Brewer (2009), made up a starting rotation which helped the BayBears dominate in the second half of the Southern League season, survive a five-game series with Birmingham in the South Division Playoffs and take down Tennessee in four games to help Mobile claim its first Southern League crown since 2004, and their first outright crown since 1998.

Congrats to the BayBears!

This note just posted on the Missoula Osprey page on Facebook:

Congrats to Double-A Mobile, who won the Southern League crown today. The BayBears include several former Osprey, including Adam Eaton (2010), Charles Brewer (2009), Jarrod Parker (2007), Taylor Harbin (2007), Jake Elmore (2008), Ollie Linton (2008), Bryan Henry (2007), Clay Zavada (2006), Yonata Ortega (2007), Kyle Greene (2008) and hitting coach Alan Zinter (2008). Paul Goldschmidt (2009) was also on that squad before his promotion to the D-backs.

The Mobile BayBears won a 6-4 decision over the Tennessee Smokies to take their first Southern League crown since 2004, winning the series in four games.

Seeing some of the celebration pics … well, I could get all sorts of critical and point out a lack of, um, thought in the picture taking, because, after all, it’s in the clubhouse, and guys don’t necessarily care if cameras are in there or not. (Now the subject of the column, definitely good.) I think I was also struck a bit by the amount of hair on Ollie Linton’s head, but that is a story for a different day …

I do want to point out the trophy pic (at the top of the story), however, which is surrounded by, clockwise from Noon, Taylor Harbin, Jake Elmore, Adam Eaton and the before-mentioned Linton (to the left of the trophy). Yes, you will have to click on it to see it, or … well, we’ll try to post the pic a little later.

Anyway, Goldy celebrated with a two-hit, three-RBI day in the D-backs’ 5-1 win at San Diego.

Postseason update

The Osprey are going to have to carry the mantle for the D-backs affiliates in the postseason, at least for today. Both Triple-A Reno and Double-A Mobile lost their playoff games today.

The Aces not only lost their game to Sacramento, 13-2, they also lost all of their 2-0 lead as they were swept in three game by the homestand River Cats, who take the Pacific Coast League Pacific Playoff, 3-2. Sacramento will now play Omaha for the PCL title.

The BayBears, however, live to play another day. Birmingham used a 7-1 win today to draw even in their Best-of-5 Southern League South Division Series at two games apiece. They will play the decider on Monday in Mobile.

Lineups, more Goldy … yeah, that will work.

Leading off … Paul Goldschmidt has been named USA Today Minor League Player of the Year. The story is a great write-up on not only the present, but his past as well.
