Postseason update

The Osprey are going to have to carry the mantle for the D-backs affiliates in the postseason, at least for today. Both Triple-A Reno and Double-A Mobile lost their playoff games today.

The Aces not only lost their game to Sacramento, 13-2, they also lost all of their 2-0 lead as they were swept in three game by the homestand River Cats, who take the Pacific Coast League Pacific Playoff, 3-2. Sacramento will now play Omaha for the PCL title.

The BayBears, however, live to play another day. Birmingham used a 7-1 win today to draw even in their Best-of-5 Southern League South Division Series at two games apiece. They will play the decider on Monday in Mobile.

More coming shortly …

Are you ready for some playoff baseball??

by Ben Catley

As one Osprey said on the bus before the team pulled out for Great Falls … Boys, we get four wins and we get a ring. I haven’t seen this kind of energy or have felt this vibe from the team since mid-July. Let’s hope the real 2011 Missoula Osprey are ready to show what they are all about.

Osprey vs. Great Falls Playoff History:

Just one series, in 2009, when the Osprey made the playoffs via the wild-card format, and took Game 1 at home, lost in Game 2 at Centene Stadium, then exploded for 16 runs in Game 3 to win the North going away.

Lineups to come soon … and more notes. Should have the preview article up on http://www.missoulaosprey.com shortly.

– The Osprey are about to set the new team record in total bases. The first hit for Missoula today will tie the mark, unless that hit is for extra bases, at which point it will break the mark, originally set in 2001 of 1,183 total bases. The 2011 Osprey currently have 1,182 total bases.

The team record list (those than can be set or have been already set):

Marks that can be set this season by the 2011 Osprey (entering 9/5/11):

PITCHING
ERA: 2.43, William Juarez, 2002 – Currently, Taylor Siemens has a 2.23 ERA, with 60.2 innings pitched. He will end up 1/3 of an inning pitched shy of the ERA title. The qualifier would be 60.8 innings, which is rounded up to 61. Written out, Siemens has 60.67 innings pitched.

Lineups and notes from Helena

First … Eric Groff doubled his RBI total against the Helena Brewers this season with a 2-homer, 3-RBI performance last night. He had just three RBIs in the 14 prior games between the two teams, and entered the series hitting just .232 against Brewers pitching.

Next… Did you know that the second strikeout the Osprey collect on the mound tonight will set the new team record? The 2005 staff collected 688 strikeouts, while this season’s version of the Osprey pitching staff has 687 Ks entering tonight. That’s also 13 from the never-reached-before plateau of 700 Ks. The staffs for Helena, Ogden and Idaho Falls could also reach the 700 mark, with the Chukars just 14 strikeouts behind the Osprey at the moment.

One more thing … Jon Griffin is having the night off. If that holds, look out tomorrow in Billings. On two occasions this season, Griffin has followed a day off with a two0-homer game.
